How to Keep Pearls and Gemstone in good condition

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Pearl beads are extremely soft and will scratch quite easily and so it is important to store your pearls in a soft bag free of dust or anything which may scratch your pearls. Remember to restring your pearls jewelry regularly, particularly if you wear and clean them frequently.

Softer gemstones scratch easily, other types of gemstones crack and certain gemstones can also be damaged changes in heat. Store your gemstones in individual bags and keep them in an area with relatively stable temperatures. Certain porous gemstones like Emerald should not become too dry or they may in fact crack. For this reason these gemstones should be re-oiled every year or so depending upon your climate.

Apply makeup and perfume before putting on your jewelry. The chemicals will damage sensitive gemstones (like freshwater pearl jewelry) and tarnish metals like silver.
Remove jewelry when cleaning. Ammonia, detergents and other household chemicals will damage jewelry.

Do not shower with your jewelry on for the same reasons as the above point. In addition to damage from chemicals any jewelry which falls off, you will lose your jewelry to the plug hole.

Do not swim at the beach or swimming pool with jewelry on. Chlorine and salt will damage your gemstones and metals.

Natural Pearls, Cultured Pearls and Mabe Pearls

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Natural Pearls
These are the most rare form of a pearl. They form without human instigation. The process begins when an irritant positions itself inside the oyster. As a defensive measure, the oyster secrets layers of nacre which cover the irritant. This nacre forms the “pearl” as we know it. The amount, quality and shape of nacre that surrounds the irritant particle essentially determines the quality of the pearl jewelry.

Cultured Pearls
Made famous by Mikimoto, nearly all pearls sold on the open market are cultured. Cultured freshwater pearls evolve in a similar manner as natural pearls, with the distinction being that cultured pearls have an irritant intentionally placed by a pearl farmer to start the formation of a pearl. The process may take one to several years. Japan, China and various places in the South Pacific have traditionally been major suppliers of cultured pearls jewelry

Mabe Pearls
These are grown in Japan, China and the United States. They are hemispherical cultured pearls grown against the shell of an oyster rather than within the oyster’s body.

Freshwater Pearl

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Freshwater Pearls come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are found in lakes and rivers around the world and tend to be less expensive than their saltwater cousins, which make them a popular choice among young and trendy folk. The quality of Freshwater pearls has been steadily improving since 1991, thanks to better cultivation techniques and a more widespread use of the sankaku mussel. At the end of 1992, semi-round Chinese freshwater pearl made their appearance on the market and now offer an attractive, lower priced alternative to the round Akoya pearls.

The general term for any pearl cultivated in a lake, pond or river area is freshwater cultured pearl.

Price Factors
The grading of freshwater pearls is more variable than that of saltwater pearls.  Nevertheless, there is agreement about certain value factors.  Freshwater pearls are generally valued according to the following criteria:

Luster
The higher and more even the luster, the greater the value. In high-quality freshwater pearls, there is an evenly distributed luster and a high contrast between the light and dark areas of the pearls.  When judging freshwater pearls for luster, examine them on a white background and be sure to roll them so you can see their entire surface area. It is important that your eye become sensitive to luster variations because luster is one of the most important determinants of value in pearls of all types.

Smoothness
Then smoother the pearl, the more valuable it is. Even though bumpy, wrinkled surfaces can lower the value of freshwater pearls, the bumps and wrinkles are not considered flaws.

Colour
Freshwater pearls jewelry come in a wide variety of body colours white, pink, orange, yellow, lavender, gray, bronze; some pearls are even bi-coloured.

Shape
Usually the more round a pearl is, the greater its value. Large high-quality, baroque shapes can command high prices and make distinctive jewelry pieces.
Since 1992, a lot of semi-round (off-round) and ovalish freshwater pearls have become available.  Often they are described as potato, corn and pea shapes. These pearls can be used to make impressive looking jewelry pieces that sell for moderate prices.

Weight
Freshwater pearl prices are generally quoted by weight or by the strand. The gram is probably the most common unit of weight used at the retail level, some dealers quote prices according to carat weight. The measurements of pearls are often listed along with their weight as an additional description and means of identification. The size of round freshwater pearls jewelry may be expressed by their diameter, measured in millimeters.
